Pastichio- Greek Lasagna

This dish is my daughter’s absolute favourite… So, I decided to make it again seeing we hadn”t had it for a while. It is a simple dish very similar to Lasagna…  Greece is known world-wide for it along with Moussaka and Souvlaki and Greek Salad…

So here is the recipe:

Ingredients:

For the meat sauce

  • 750 grams minced beef or a mixture of minced beef and pork
  • 1 large onion or 2 medium-sized ones
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 can of finely chopped tomatoes processed into sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 small glass  dry red wine
  • Mixed spices ( cinnamon, cloves, etc)
  • Mixed herbs for meat dishes
  • dash of sugar
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 pack of Penne Pasta ( 500gr)
For the Bechamel Sauce

  • 150 grams butter or margarine
  • 1 cup of flour ( approx. 250 gr)
  • 1 litre of milk
  • 2 eggs
  • grated cheese ( parmesan, gruyer, pecorino)
  • nutmeg
  • salt and pepper
How to make it:

Place the onion and garlic in a food processor and finely chop them. Add them to a saucepan that has some olive oil and saute them.. Then add the mince meat and let it turn brown. Once that is done pour the glass of wine.. After a few minutes add the tomatoes and tomato paste, sugar herbs, spices, salt and pepper and a little water and let it boil until the sauce is ready. ( This is a basic mince meat sauce)
In another pot add water, salt and bring it to boil adding your pasta. Boil them according to the instructions (7-10 minutes).
In another deep pot add the butter and let it melt, then add the flour lower the heat and stir… Add the milk and beat it until all chunks of flour are gone… Beat two eggs and then add them in the cream sauce stirring consistently. Add the nutmeg, salt, pepper and cheese…
Once everything is done. Take a Pyrex dish add the pasta ( sprinkle some grated cheese), then add mince meat (sprinkle some cheese), then again pasta and mince meat and then add the bechamel cream sauce, sprinkle with cheese and place in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius for about 50 minutes until the top is golden brown.
Let it cool down before cutting it up… Enjoy with a lovely green salad and a glass of wine!
Enjoy!!!! – Κali Orexi!!!
