Melomakarona is another traditional Greek Christmas dessert.

Here is the recipe:

Ingredients

  • 400 gr freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 400 gr Vegetable Oil
  • 180 gr. Olive Oil
  • 50 gr. Confectioners Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp powdered Cloves
  • 2 – 3 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp Nutmeg
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda
  • the zest of 2 oranges
  • 1000 gr. All Purpose Flour
  • 200gr.  fine Semolina
  • Finely Chopped Walnuts (to drizzle over them)
  • Honey ( to drizzle over them)

For the Syrup

  • 500 gr Water
  • 800 gr. Sugar
  • 150 gr. Honey
  • 1 orange cut in half
  • 3 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 3 whole Cloves

Method

We prepare the syrup first so it can cool down. In a pot we place the water, sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves and the orange cut in half and we let it come to a boil. Once it starts boiling we remove it from the stove and add the honey. We allow it to cool down as we start preparing the dough for the Melomakarona.

In a bowl we add all the ingredients except the flour and semolina and we stir well. Once everything is dissolved we add the flour-semolina mixture and continue to stir softly. Once the dough is ready we take a small piece and shape it into an oval cookie and place on a baking tray which we have lined with baking paper. We take a fork and poke them. ( This will help them absorb the syrup later on). We bake them in a pre-heated oven at 190 degrees Celsius for about 20-25 minutes (until they are golden brown).

Once done we remove them from the tray and throw them in portions into the pot with the syrup which has cooled down for approximately 20 seconds. We take a wonderful plate and drizzle it with honey and the finely chopped walnuts. We place the melomakarona nicely on the plate and drizzle them with honey and walnuts.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!!!!
